NAAAP-NC Scholarship Program

The National Association of Asian American Professionals-North Carolina Chapter announces its second year of awarding its College Scholarship, to be awarded to at least two college-bound high school seniors in spring of 2008. The top winners will be awarded $500.00 each.

Eligibility:

1. Applicants must be currently enrolled high school seniors living in North Carolina who will attend four-year colleges in the fall of 2008.

2. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average.

Criteria:

Applicants will be judged on the basis of community involvement, particularly in Asian American organizations; academic achievement; financial need; and an essay on one of several designated books.

DEADLINE: Entry must be postmarked by JANUARY 20, 2008.

List your activities and honors received during high school, describe any Asian American community involvement, and describe any financial need or hardships. Please enclose a copy of your school transcript from 9th grade to the present.

Applicants should also send an essay up to five pages, double-spaced, in 12-point font with one-inch margins, on one of the following books:

  • My Country Versus Me by Wen Ho Lee as told to Helen Zia
  • A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles of South Asian Women in America by Shamita Das Dasgupta
  • Fighting Tradition: A Marine’s Journey to Justice by Captain Bruce Yamashita
  • A Sense of Duty: My Father, My American Journey by Quang X. Pham
  • Yell-Oh Girls! by Vickie Nam
  • How I Became a Black Man by Irwin Tang
  • Race, Rights, and the Asian American Experience by Angelo Ancheta

These books are available at libraries, bookstores, half.com and/or amazon.com. Essays more than five pages long will not be considered. Winners agree to allow NAAAP-NC to publish their essays on www.naaap-nc.org and through other NAAAP channels. Submission materials will not be returned unless you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
